Quick answer

Thick wool felt is the best all-round material for a sauna hat because wool insulates well, breathes and copes with heat and moisture. Merino wool felt is a premium choice that feels softer. Linen is lighter and cooler but insulates less; cotton and synthetics are the weakest options.

What matters in a sauna hat material

  • Insulation: how well it slows heat reaching your head.
  • Breathability: whether moisture and heat can escape.
  • Heat tolerance: natural fibres handle sauna heat far better than many synthetics.
  • Durability: whether it keeps its shape after repeated sessions and drying.

Why merino?

Merino sheep grow fine, crimped fibres. Felted thickly, merino creates a dense layer that insulates well while feeling softer against the skin than coarser wool. New Zealand is one of the world's best-known merino-growing regions.

CALOR hats are hand-felted from 100% New Zealand merino wool felt, approximately 3mm thick, a thick felt designed to stay comfortable round after round.

Does thickness matter more than material?

Both matter. A thin wool hat may insulate less than a thick one, so look at felt thickness as well as fibre. Dense, thick felt also holds its shape better over time.

Squeeze the brim. Good sauna felt feels dense and springs back, rather than floppy or papery.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best material for a sauna hat?

Thick wool felt, and merino wool felt in particular. It insulates, breathes and handles heat and moisture well.

Are linen sauna hats good?

Linen is light and breathable but insulates less than wool felt. It suits people who use milder saunas or prefer a very light hat.

Can you use a cotton hat in a sauna?

You can, but cotton insulates less and gets soggy with sweat. Wool felt is a better choice for regular use.
